Indian weddings have a lot of traditions which might end up making the event dull and boring, especially for the fun loving guests. Once the baraat reaches the venue, a fun game ensues called the Joota Chupai or the ‘Shoe stealing game’.
When the groom enters the mandap for the wedding ceremony he takes off his shoes. As soon as he does that, the unmarried girls from the bride’s side of the family steal them and run, laughing and tripping over their lehengas.
The groom’s side has to try to rescue the shoes back while the bride’s side helps the girls to hide them. The groom must leave the mandap in the same shoes he came in according to customs, so he is forced to buy it off from the girls.
This fun game ends with the message that the groom will treat the girls as his own sisters and welcomes them into his family.
